William Oppat, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. William F. Oppat is the Surgical Director of the Simulation and Education Center and the Van Elslander Surgical Innovation Center. He oversees simulation activities with a focus on current best practices and the utilization of modern medical equipment for physicians-in-training. As the Surgery Program Director for Medical Education at Ascension Providence Hospital, Southfield and Novi Campuses, he directs curriculum development and facilitates residents’ surgical training. Dr. Oppat also instructs medical students as a Clinical Assistant Professor for Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and as an Adjunct Clinical Professor for the American University of the Caribbean.
In addition to his roles at Ascension Providence Hospital, Dr. Oppat serves as the Program Director for Vascular Surgery at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center, and Chief and Clinical Associate Professor in Vascular Surgery for Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Dr. Oppat earned his B.S. in Molecular Biology/Chemistry from the University of Michigan. He went on to complete an M.S. in Physiology from Wayne State University and graduated with his M.D. from the institution’s medical school. Dr. Oppat completed his post-graduate training at Northwestern University School of Medicine in Chicago, Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia, and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He is double board-certified through the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Surgery.
As a clinician, Dr. Oppat focused his career on the sub-specialty of vascular surgery. He had the privilege of training and practicing internationally which enriched his abilities as an educator. Beyond his award-winning educational leadership, Dr. Oppat is an esteemed professional among his peers, having served as President of the Michigan Vascular Surgical Society and President of the Surgical Associates of Michigan. The surgeon has also fulfilled duties as a board member of Together Heath Network and The Physician Alliance, and is active in various professional societies.
